ACTUALITIES
Poland - November 2009

In November we contacted local institution – the Polish Union of the Senior Citizens and the Disabled located in our area. As being the institution which concerns older people, they agreed to cooperate with our school taking part in the Comenius project.Andrzejki is the day of St. Andrew, who is the patron of Scotland, Greece, and Russia. In Poland, the holiday is celebrated on the night of the 29th through 30th of November. Traditionally, the holiday was only observed by young single girls, though today both young men and women join the party to see their futures. It is mainly about having fun.

We wondered how this traditional event was celebrated years ago. We wanted to find some differences and similarities hoping that the elderly could tell us something interesting we’ve never heard. As a matter of fact, students and teachers were deeply fascinated by the way the elderly told us interesting stories from their youth and what’s more they prepared and show some craft works connected with Saint Andrew’s Eve ,which now are vanished (e.g. hand weaving).

The meeting was of a huge value for pupils and teachers as well.

The deputy of Department Director Mrs. Benita Silina presented the main directions of social work in the city – the social help and social services (the type of social work based on the long-term experience of European countries). Germany - November 2009

In November 2009 our students made Christmas greeting cards in their art lessons for the meeting with the seniors in December. They also learnt some poems by heart and presented them in the seniors’ citizen home in December.

Another important part in these activities was taken over by the teachers of religion. They worked together with the students to prepare religious greetings for the seniors which were very welcomed by them. The students enjoyed the activities very much and loved to prepare all these things for the concert they gave in the Paulinenstift in December 2009.
