ACTUALITIES
Poland - January 2010

In January we invited grandparents to our school. Students prepared a small concert for them. They sang songs and recited poems. They also acted out the tale of Cinderella .

Traditionally we always celebrate in our school Grandfather’s and Grandmother’s Day on 21st and 22nd of January. After the show children invited their grandparents for a snack. The general idea of the meeting is to show students’ appreciation for their grandparents’ love and care. The grandparents were very happy and touched.

Turkey - January 2010

The first activity of the month was when Mr Budak, a senior well-known children’s poet came to the school and talked to the Year 3, 4 and 5 students about poems he has written over the years.

Mr Budak read some of the poems by himself and others he read with the children. Alot of interest and sharing took place. The main activity of January was a combined breakfast with children and grandparents. After breakfast and a cup of tea the children sang, danced and recited a poem. The Grand- parents in return taught the children some of their childhood songs and folklore dances. Before everyone departed their own ways children and grandparents went for a short walk through the nearby forest.

At the beginning of the second week Serpil and the Headmistress, Emel Karaca visited the mayor of Fethiye to talk about the project and the possibility of extending it into the wider community by organising a gardening activity. This was looked on favourably and will hopefully be started in the near future.

During the month there was another visit to the Senior People’s Home this time to give them an album and a display of photos that were taken the previous month

Before the students started their two week holiday questionaires were distributed so they can be completed.

Latvia - January 2010

In 21st of January we, a 9th grade students group, were invited to informative excursion to Daugavpils regional senior house. We were warmly welcomed by the vice director of the institution.

There we were told about pension’s significance, structure and history. The main aim of this trip was to introduce the young to mature people lifestyle in the pension, to inform us about the main factors of seniors life and show us an institution which takes care of our older generation.

During this excursion we were introduced to many inhabitants of this quiet residence. The residence has 3 different buildings with a wonderful dining room. At this time this place is used by 243 people of 270 possible. We met the oldest person – a 103 years old woman and the youngest one – a 27 - year - old young man. It is surprising because the senior house is a home for many people different age with special needs. Some of the inhabitants are very gifted and they improve their talent in there. We saw many beautiful handicrafts presented by them.

This trip was very interesting, it made us change our opinions about seniors` life.
