Our grandparents

On the first February week all students of form 9 presented creative works in English about their grandparents. The scheme of the work was based on the questionnaire made during the project meeting in Friedrihshafen. Some pupils recognized that they found out new facts about their closest people and about their youth, life, lifestyle, habits etc. The students told about free time activities they do together with grandmothers and grandfathers.

Meeting with the dance group

6 girls from class 9 were invited by our ex-German teacher Ilga Upeniece to the seniors` dance group training. There are more than 30 participants aged 60 – 74 in the group trained by a very attractive men. The atmosphere was very warm and hearty. We decided to stage on one dance together. We were surprised by the participants` excellent physical form and energy.
Social care and rehabilitation centre of Daugavpils”

During the project week the students from class 9 and 11 visited the „Social care and rehabilitation centre of Daugavpils”. This institution offers old people many different activities: like playing snooker, literature evenings, concerts, dancing and other activities which seniors can` t do at home. We decided that old people in our town have many possibilities to spend their free time for free, because it is paid by our town council. We found out that during a month the centre is attended by 1800 visitors. Every day the centre has 109 visitors. The centre offers activities developing physical, mental, environmental and information skills. We were surprised by the creation level of handicrafts made by participants. Some of our students decided to join the volunteer work. The results of our project work were presented to other students on Friday, 19th February.

Turkey - February 2010

The first week of February was a holiday for both students and teachers. During the break the core group of students began interviewing senior citizens and filling out questionnaires. The activity will continue until the beginning of April.

Both Year 3 and 7 students looked into their family heritages. The Year 3’s researched family members and draw family trees, while the older students looked deeper in their backgrounds and found out that the majority of thier family ancestors come from a variety of cultures.

The family trees were also written in the Year 6’s German lessons. Folklore dancing and choir practise with senior citizens also continued on Wednesday afternoons.

Another activity for this month was a jointly written English poem by the Year 4 students about the relationship between generations. After writing the poem it was then translated and read to the citizens at the Senior Citizens Home.

My mum is the most beautiful mum,
My mum, my mum.
My dad is the best dad,
My dad, my dad.
As you know, all together,
We are never alone.
Grandma,grandpa
Together we are one.
Like a group of stars,
We live as one.
Open arms for happiness,
Closed doors to sadness.
School is like my home,
Teachers, friends,
All at Özel ATA
Bring me health and happiness.
Even at seventy, With a head of white hair,
From the bottom of my heart,
Mum, Dad
Grandma, Grandpa
And SCHOOL.
I love you all.

Germany - February 2010

In January our students went to the senior’s home and interviewed the inhabitants. It was quite interesting for both, the students and the seniors, and they both enjoyed it very much.

Very often the interview was only the beginning of an interesting conversation with the seniors. We enjoyed these afternoons very much and the seniors as well. We spent a lot of time in the Paulinenstift and had a great time there, as you can see. The talks with the seniors were very interesting and some of them told us a lot about their lives, things we didn’t know before. Most of them have had a hard time as all of them witnessed World War I and World War II. Nearly all of them lost fathers, brothers, friends or even their husbands.

All of them said that the former times were not easy especially for women. They were not able or allowed to do the education they wanted, they couldn’t study what they want and many of them were busy caring for their families all their lives.
