ACTUALITIES
Poland - March 2010

In March a group of our students was invited by a senior folklore band from our area. The elderly ladies sang songs which for the younger generation were completely unknown. Pupils listened to the songs with curiosity, whats more they had the opportunity to taste cakes baked by the elderly ladies.

Students also received hand decorated eggs made by the folklore band members. Eggs and special cakes were prepared because of the traditional holiday Easter - strongly cultivated in our country, celebrated in April.(Decorating Easter eggs is an element of folk culture. Traditionally, before they are dyed the eggs are painted over with patterns.)

Latvia - March 2010

At the beginning of March the teachers had a meeting with the representatives of City Council Social Department. We were informed about the structure and main goals of the department’s work. This institution offers social help to senior people in different areas. The newest offer is home care. There are about 300 clients at the moment and 31 specialists working now. Among the clients women dominate.

The students carried out a survey and at the end of the month presented results about modern family structure, the main activities of elderly people, and their role in the family, their hobbies, dreams and wishes to younger generation. The results can be seen in the presentation added.

Germany - March 2010

Alexander and Florian after finishing the interview Alexander and Florian after finishing the interview

In March we went on doing our interviews with the seniors. Many of them had interesting stories to tell. Here are some examples:

One man, 89 years old, was mayor in a small town. After that he worked as a lawyer until he was 66 years old. He is still active and works as an advisor to the local bus and train department and tells them how to improve train and bus schedules for senior citizens. His advice to the younger generation is:

Don’t have prejudices and be more active, but always learn…

One woman, 96 years, worked until she was 72 years old. She worked in a tax office and liked her job very much. She did a lot of sport when she was younger, played tennis, went skiing and loved swimming. And she also loves pets very much. So she likes it when the children bring their pets to the home of the seniors. Todays youth is different in her opinion. They dont behave like the young people did in her time and what she regrets most is that many of them have only little respect towards older people.

A very different life led Edith Pakulat (84). She worked only for 3 years in a bank as the war destroyed all her plans for the future.

The rest of her life she spent with her family after her marriage in 1950. Although the war had influenced her life to a great extend in a very negative way she is a very lively and joyful person.

In the war she had to run away from her home in the Eastern part of Germany, leaving back everything behind and lost everything. Twice she had to run away from the troops of Hitler and Stalin, even was raped by the soldiers.

Finally she came to the Lake of Constance where she found her new home. Here she was very active, could do what she always wanted to do, was the coach of different sport groups for more than 6 years and still likes doing sport. Every day she enjoys the sight from her window across the Lake which helps her to forget the bad experiences she had made in the years of WW II.

She has 3 sons, but one of them died in an accident. Her husband also died some years ago and her sister too. She seldom sees her 2 sons as they live in different towns far away. Therefore she enjoys the visits of the pupils from the Graf-Soden as this is her only contact with young people.
