Germany - July 2010 |
|
In July we invited our grandparents and parents into school and asked them to tell us about manners now and then, the differences and the similarities.
It was a very interesting afternoon. Some of them told us how to lay a table. We also talked about how to behave in certain situations, for example in the bus, when being invited or how to receive guests. We also talked about the different understanding of manners and behaviour in their time and in our time.
After the work in different groups we organized a quiz and everybody took part in it. This afternoon was a great success and everybody enjoyed it.

Turkey - July 2010 |
|
Before the summer holidays began the teachers talked to their students about the importance of making or keeping contact with their grandparents or senior citizens in their neighbourhood during the three month school break.
On returning to school in September the students were asked what they had done towards the project.
The replies:
Amber-Rose: During the holiday I decided to
go to my grandmother’s and ask
to look at old photos. It was really
interesting listening to her about
the old times.
|
|
|
Jhan: This summer I decided to visit
my grandmother regularly – she
lives in a village 45km from
Fethiye – I visited her once a
fortnight. |
|
Kerem: My grandmother lives in England. I rang
and asked if she would like to come and
visit us. She came and stayed for two
weeks. It was great. |
A few of the students travelled to spend time with grandparents.
Some of the students wrote poems during their spare time in the holidays.
|
|
There is nicotin, you know
But still you smoke.
‘Why’ I ask.
‘Habit’ you reply.
So a habit.
What’s that to me.
Coffee in one hand
Cigarette in the other.
Why?
Enough! Don’t damage yourself,
I can’t look into your smokeful eyes.
I know why you cough.
No cold, no illness.
Just smoking.
Do you not understand the damage,
to you and me.
Throw it away.
Dear grandma, please.
|
|
Let me start with mum,
With special place in my heart
The place with lots of love,
Comforting me.
Now dad’s turn
There is no life without him
His warm hands make fear
Protecting me
My little wee sister, with years between us.
Small warm hands always nearby
Blue eyes always looking
Comforting me
Grandma, Grandpa,
Always behind me,
No matter our distance
Supporting me.

During the summer holidays Serpil and Ali came to the school and changed the Project panel. New photos and comments were placed on the board.
A few of our teachers are grandparents. The students asked them how they spent their holiday with their grandchildren. |
|
Alime: I have a grandson who is 3 years old.
His parents work so I looked after
him during the holidays. We went
swimming, read books and played in
the garden. |
|
Serpil: My daughter and grandson spent
three months with me. Now that they
have returned to South Africa
I miss them alot. |
|
Imkan: Summer is very a special time for me as
my grandchildren come to stay. I love spending
time with them. |
|
Gülsen: My grandchildren have recently
moved back to Turkey, so I spent as much
time as possible with them this summer
at our summer house. |
|
Emel: This is probably one of the best
summer holidays I have ever had. My
son and wife brought their 5 month old
son from Australia to be introduced to me.
He is so cute. I have alot of fond and
precious memories of this summer. |
A summer worth remembering,
as young and old spent
time together. |

Latvia - July 2010 |
|
On the 13th of July there was a theatre premiere in our city. In the framework of European program „Youth in Action” the representatives of German, Danish and Latvian youth theatre groups came together and built „ a new world” (based on the drama of Aristophanes „The birds”).
Our families were invited to this premiere as well as friends and senior citizens (from the Senior centre). Some of them were very impressed by the power, emotions and creativity of young actors.
The play was shown in Berlin and Enschede, too. Some grandparents came from Cologne and Munich to see the children playing. They admitted that the world had changed and young people from Eastern and Western Europe can create beautiful things together making our world better.
